Delivering Proactive Capacity Management

OmniVision Capacity Reporting provides IT Managers with the accurate information needed to optimize the balance between distributed resources, business demand and IT budgets. Delivered as the Global Resource Report, it is one of several core reporting solutions in the OmniVision suite that are delivered through a web-based publication system.

Capacity Reporting allows managers to obtain a top-down view of their infrastructure for proactive, business-oriented capacity resource management. It provides normalized information and analysis on diverse environments to optimize resource allocation, justify new investments and plan for future infrastructure growth.

Identify & Prioritize Risks

Capacity Reporting provides risk assessment of every server to determine whether a critical resource — CPU, memory, I/O or network — will become saturated by the workload the system supports. It monitors and reports on current risk levels, historical risk levels and trends in risk over time. This provides a clear prioritization of systems that require attention and fair warning of where demand will soon be exceeding resource capacity.

Consolidation Support

Capacity Reporting automatically analyzes two operational aspects that are vital to consolidation decisions. It monitors the balance between system capacity and actual usage to highlight those that are ideal candidates for consolidation or retirement. It also monitors resource consumption by application instances to identify opportunities to combine or re-host applications to match system capabilities.

Optimize Budgets

Weekly and monthly capacity analysis identifies ways to make the most of IT budgets. Capacity Reporting identifies system upgrade opportunities where investment could have a measurable effect on service delivery. Alternatively, it helps determine whether managing the workload through better distribution of processing, when possible, could produce much of the same improvement without capital expenditure.

At the opposite end of the utilization spectrum, Capacity Reporting identifies systems that are supporting little or no workload. These systems could be "recycled" and reutilized in place of new resource investments. In some cases, these unused systems no longer serve a useful purpose and can simply be removed from configuration, saving maintenance and operational expenses.

When new investment is needed, Capacity Reporting provides objective facts and long term analysis. Its ready-made reports objectively show the current and evolving situation — the information required to justify expenditures to key decision makers.

EADS Astrium chose OmniVision to provide synthetic reports for IT teams and the management of its 230 servers and hundreds of workstations spread over several remote sites.

"Our existing system administration tools didn't allow us to proactively manage our whole infrastructure... OmniVision's off the shelf dashboards give us this visibility. Armed with objective information provided by OmniVision we can justify our resource investments before saturation appears. Communication with users and with top management is improved."
