Control of IT budgets with OmniVision takes different forms. In one form, the control comes in the form of identifying existing systems and applications and being able to reduce, consolidate or redeploy these resources to meet changing needs without releasing funds. In another form, budget control comes by avoiding or delaying upgrades or replacements based upon actual delivered service quality.

OmniVision for Your Service
OmniVision's structured reporting and business-focused dashboards provide both management and technical staff with clear information, objectively identifying quality of service and business capability issues. The reports are presented as dashboards using clear key performance metrics based on business concepts. They aid decision-making by tracking and analyzing both the quality of service delivered by systems and applications and their capacity to support business goals.

Continuous improvement initiatives require impartial, on-going measurement of performance and quality. OmniVision's built-in automation and analysis meet these requirements by design.

The OmniVision Solution
OmniVision is a completely different solution for managing distributed systems and applications, because it automatically delivers "best practice" analytical reports of activity, capacity and usage across an organization's entire IT assets. OmniVision assists:

Tactical resource management for maximum return on IT investment – Giving companies advance warning of resource imbalances, from identifying systems that are at risk of resource saturation to systems that are currently unused

Strategic resource planning for " just in time" capacity – Analyzing and reporting trends and predicting future system requirements

Quality reporting for service verification – Accurate evaluation of service quality delivered by systems and applications

OmniVision analyzes past behavior, and current demands, showing change over time. It reports on service quality delivered by IT to business units and departments, highlighting systems that are not fully utilized and could be reallocated. Organizations with 50 or more production servers can use OmniVision for:

Immediate planning support – through an hoc query-based interface to interrogate the enterprise data store filled with activity and risk metrics. Ad hoc queries provide quick answers to questions such as "Which systems?", "Are they in the enterprise?", "Which ones are at the highest risk of CPU overload?"

Short-term planning – quality reports offer a top-down, exception management approach that identifies where capacity issues are impacting service quality.

Mid-term planning – resource reports highlight areas and systems where capacity is falling short of demand. As systems become classified as "nearly overloaded", it is generally time to start planning for expansion, balancing or reallocating. The global resource reports provide early warnings of growing trends, giving enough time for proactive planning

Long-term planning – Longer term planning with OmniVision can be driven by organization and business growth plans, using the automated analysis to fine tune the general plans into specific actions. Capital purchases can be postponed until the capacity needs appear in OmniVision reports, rather than purchased in anticipation of needs that have not been quantified.

OmniVision delivers a view of your infrastructure seen from the top down – from a management perspective and driven by your priorities. Unlike bottom-up tools, OmniVision analysis is expectation-driven to isolate and highlight the information that brings the largest business return, saving time and analysis as you identify ways to save budgets and resources.

Service Quality and Capacity Analysis
OmniVision delivers reports through an automated web-based publication system that analyzes and reports on the IT infrastructure from different viewpoints. Designed for IT managers, executives, as well as capacity and problem management staff, OmniVision provides automated access to key information on the behavior of their infrastructure.

The quality analytics of OmniVision highlight systems and groups of systems based upon the detection and classification of service quality "incidents". An incident can be either an interval when the risk of resource saturation was likely to impact optimum performance, or a period of application or server downtime.

The structure of the OmniVision solution allows managers to start at a top-level view of their enterprise, gaining a global perspective of the infrastructure in terms of the systems, the application and the utilization of both. The nature of OmniVision reports guides the user to the important results and analysis, highlighting where attention and decisions are needed.

The OmniVision solution is based upon automation and analysis to deliver the information needed to manage your infrastructure efficiently, from different perspectives.

System Classification and Resource Planning
OmniVision includes an automated analytical routines that apply business logic to the performance and utilization of infrastructure components. One aspect of this analysis reports on IT infrastructure from the standpoint of system and resource utilization and capabilities. These reports provide IT and capacity managers with homogeneous information and analysis on diverse environments so they can optimize resource allocation, justify new investments and plan for infrastructure growth.

A unique system classification feature assesses the level of balance between the configuration of a server and the workload it supports. There are five basic levels of classification:

Underused – the workload has no measurable impact on system resources
Nearly underused – the workload is measurable, but system resources are underused
Normal – the workload and system resources are in balance
Nearly overused – the system is experiencing some risk of saturation or is trending toward it
Overused – the resources of this system are being saturated by the intensity of the workload

The system classification is performed weekly for all system groups in the enterprise and is reported at both the enterprise and group level. The objective of the analysis is to identify the "real" state of each system and not to be misled by insignificant outlying values. To accomplish this, OmniVision accesses at least three weeks of data with weighted averages applied to the weekly scores. The range of weeks always includes the current week plus the two previous weeks and may also include the projected values for the next week.

This automated analysis and centralized reporting act as the eyes and ears of IT managers by keeping them in front of capacity and workload issues. This report can serve as a shopping list of areas where capacity issues will need attention, either to expand, contract or reallocate resources.

The weekly report shows a global synopsis of system classification as well as the details, at a group and system level, necessary to identify systems that are out of balance with workload demand.

Components of a Solution
The OmniVision solution is built to collect and analyze the information collected from across your enterprise, then deliver the results as meaningful business information in a series of dashboard reports tailored to the interests of different managers within your organization. One of the strongest values of OmniVision is that most of the mechanics required to gather the information, run the analysis and generate the management reports is performed automatically, without intervention. The behind-the-scenes work that OmniVision performs includes features that:

Adapt to your organization and business structure
Identify the risk of resource saturation for each server or workstation
Maintain service quality history records for each incident
Look for trends and patterns in observed data
Report by exception of capacity and quality shortcomings

Distributed resource management is a challenging task, moreso whenever the number of systems exceeds the logical grasp of the people who manage performance or plan capacity. The challenge is not so much a technical one - the components and construction of a good performance study don't really change with scale - but more of a management one. How, given an enterprise with dozens or scores of servers, can you locate the system, the application, the workstation that most needs attention right now? The task becomes still more complex when the population of systems reaches into the hundreds or even thousands.

On any scale, effective recource management success is measured with the ability to know which, if any, of all the servers is running out of CPU horsepower this week, and which ones are likely to run out of that – or some other vital resource – next week, or next month? That is the challenge. Assuming an organization is willing to invest the talent and expertise to understand capacity, performance and service quality issues, once they are identified, the barrier to their success is this simple – a basic inability to be everywhere and see everything all at once.

OmniVision provides the answer – and the vision – to see the important aspects of your enterprise, automatically.
